SINGAPORE: Singapore’s fourth public—funded university will open its doors in 2011, offering programmes in Engineering and Applied Science, Business and Information Technology, and Architecture and Design.

ADVERTISEMENT

The disciplinary areas chosen for the new university’s initial offerings will serve Singapore’s economy and manpower needs over the medium term.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has appointed Philip Ng Chee Tat, CEO of property developer Far East Organisation, as chairman of the steering committee to oversee the establishment of the new university.

The committee will comprise leaders from the academia, industry and public sector.

One of the committee’s main tasks is to develop a masterplan for the development of the new university’s permanent campus and to locate a temporary campus in the interim.

It will also appoint the board of trustees and management team for the institution, which includes an international search for the president of the new university.

The steering committee will guide the development of the new university’s programmes and identify suitable and reputable overseas universities to form partnerships and collaborations.

The new university’s campus will be located right next to the Changi Business Park, which is home to high technology businesses and knowledge—intensive facilities of leading companies such as IBM.

MOE said the location will offer the new university opportunities to develop a vibrant, industry—academia ecosystem around the campus, with possible link—ups with companies nearby.

The new campus will be built on the plot of land that was previously set aside for the University of New South Wales’ (UNSW) Singapore campus.

MOE is conducting a public consultation on the naming of the new university and members of the public can submit their ideas online at www.moe.gov.sg/name—the—uni.

Soy reduces sperm count: study (ALERT)

WASHINGTON (AFP) - - Eating or drinking a lot of products containing soy and isoflavones can result in reduced sperm count among men, a Harvard School of Public Health study has shown.

"There has been a lot of interest on whether soy affects fertility because many studies in animals suggest that this is the case, but there are very few studies in humans," said researcher and lead study author Jorge Chavarro.

"This only the third study to look at whether soy food has a relationship with fertility in humans and the first one to find an association in agreement to the animal studies," he told AFP.

Soy contains isoflavones, an organic compound which acts like female hormones and appears to impede a man's ability to produce sperm.

"Isoflavones are structurally similar to estrogen and can mimic the action of estrogen in the body," said Chavarro.

"Soy is expected to have estrogen-like activity in many organs and tissues which can be beneficial for some things but it's certainly not beneficial for sperm production, at least that's what animal models suggest."

The Harvard study examined the soy intake of 99 men, determined to be part of couples experiencing fertility difficulties, over the course of three months.

"There was an inverse association between soy food intake and sperm concentration that remained significant after accounting for age, abstinence time, body mass index, caffeine and alcohol intake and smoking," the study said.

Those who ate the most soy had 41 million sperm per milliliter less than men who did not eat soy. An average man has between 80 million and 120 million sperm per milliliter.

CHICAGO (AFP) - The erectile dysfunction drug Viagra has proven effective at combating sexual dysfunction in depressed women, according to a study published Tuesday.

Sexual dysfunction is a common side effect of antidepressants and a major reason why people stop taking medication for their depression.

This is particularly problematic given that twice as many women as men are prescribed antidepressants but the most effective drugs used to combat sexual dysfunction in men are not approved for use in women, the authors wrote.

Researchers tested Viagra on 98 women whose depression was in remission but were still experiencing sexual dysfunction such as lack of arousal or pain during sex.

The women were told to take a pill one to two hours before sex for eight weeks. Half were given placebos pills which had no pharmacological effects.

Some 73 percent of the women given placebos reported no improvement with treatment while only 28 percent of the women taking Viagra said they did not notice an improvement, the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found.

Some of the women experienced headaches, flushing and indigestion but none of them withdrew from the trial because of side effects.

"By treating this bothersome treatment-associated adverse effect in patients who have been effectively treated for depression, but need to continue on their medication to avoid relapse or recurrence, patients can remain antidepressant-adherent, reduce the current high rates of premature medication discontinuation, and improve depression disease management outcomes," wrote lead author George Nurnberg of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.

ALRIGHT, i seriously think the SBS bus can enlarge their bus NUMBER BIGGER RIGHT UH?
Oh well, today i was taking bus from eunos to school, so i waiting for bus 15 at 8.30.
Bus came, i saw is 15. So i happily tried to squeeze aboard as it's Peak hr and managed to get a seat too.! Contented eh.
After travelling in the bus for 30mins, i realised,
WHAT THE FUCK AM I IN HOUGANG?.
So i immediately look at the bus number , 25 !

The man, a Kinokawa city government employee in western Japan, visited porn sites from June 2007 to February 2008, city official Tomiko Waki said. The man's name was withheld.

City officials said the number of hits discovered on his computer's internal log was so high in part because one click on certain types of pornographic sites registers multiple hits.

Despite his frequent porn viewing, none of his colleagues noticed his activities, which he apparently conducted throughout the workday.

"Each desk is set apart from each other," Waki said, adding that the man logged 170,000 hits on porn sites in July alone.

The man's supervisors discovered his extensive porn site visits after his computer became infected with a virus, prompting officials to examine his Web browser's history.

Along with the demotion, he received a 20,000 yen (US$190; �122) monthly pay cut, Waki said.
